Guided Self-Help

Guided self-help is a form of self-help, where you can learn to manage your difficulties through a structured programme of self-help and with the background support of a health professional. It is often used for mild to moderate health conditions.

Does it work?

Guided self Help (GSH) is the recommended treatment for Binge Eating Disorder in most adults, young people and children (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, NICE).

This involves self-help reading and online research to become as knowledgeable as you can about BED and how to manage it. It is supported with 4-9 x 20-minute telephone sessions with a health professional to motivate and support you.

Where Guided Self Help has not worked after 4 weeks or is unsuitable, NICE recommends Group CBT- E.
