Hints & Tips for the Festive Season 2024

Last updated: 09/12/2024

The Christmas period can be particularly challenging for those affected by eating disorders. The focus on food, change in routine, seeing family you don’t see often and receiving of presents can all contribute to stress at Christmas.

Here are a few hints and tips to help cope over the festive season:

  1. 1. Remember there’s no such things as a perfect Christmas! Consider what a “good enough” Christmas may look like and be mindful of your inner critic.
  2. 2. Consider your social supports. Family members are usually eager to help, but need your guidance. Let them know in advance about gifts you want to avoid as well as comments on weight, shape or eating. Recruit people who are likely to support you during difficult times.
  3. 3. Food is only one part of Christmas. A bit of planning can help. Write out a list and share it with your family if you think this will make the day feel safer for you.
  4. 4. Try to have fun and emphasise any traditions that don’t revolve around food. Plan fun activities for after mealtimes and other potentially stressful times e.g. board games, party games, fun quizzes, gentle walks or carol singing.

Bodywhys has just released its PiLaR carer support programme dates for January 2025 starting 09/01/2025. See their website for more information on dates and how to book. We recommend for all carers!

We wish you all a happy Christmas and the best of health in 2025.
