Preparing for Christmas with an eating disorder can feel overwhelming, however small, practical strategies can make this time more manageable. The festive period often disrupts routines, so focusing on predictability can help. As an Occupational Therapist, I encourage planning ahead, creating supportive boundaries, and using regulation strategies to stay centred. Maintaining structure, responding gently to difficult thoughts, and allowing yourself breaks can ease some of the pressure. Most importantly, practising self-compassion and recognising small wins can help you navigate this Christmas with kindness.

Some Practical Tips:

  • Create a predictable routine: Plan ahead for food related events and decide what feels safe for you.
  • Prioritise Sleep: Maintain consistent bedtimes routines to support emotional regulation and reduce overwhelm.
  • Discuss meal ideas or boundaries with a trusted support person.
  • Take breaks, seek quiet spaces, and use comforting activities when overwhelmed to stay regulated.
  • Respond to difficult thoughts with reassurance, not criticism.
  • Celebrate small wins and practise self-compassion.
